January 29, 2025 Update:

The BCA has been working with various groups on a proposed license plate readers project since 2022. Newsday reported that on January 27, 2025, the Nassau County legislature approved of a plan to install 20 license plate reader cameras in Jericho: https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/jericho-license-readers-wl0ud9d6. This project is being funded by a New York State government grant. There is no word on when the system will be operational in Jericho. When we learn more details, we will provide updates.

February 15, 2024 Update:

The BCA, a Nassau County Police Department sergeant, and staff from a local New York State assemblymember drove around East Birchwood to survey the locations where license plate reader cameras could be installed. This team is working with other government agencies to make progress. As of now, there is no definitive date for the installation and operation of the cameras. All GoFundMe.com contributions have been electronically credited to you. If you contributed via a physical check and would like it to be returned, please send an email to BirchwoodCivicLPR@Gmail.com. If you contributed via cash, we have returned your cash.

August 15, 2023 Update:

A local New York State assemblymember has informed the Birchwood Civic Association that he has secured state funds to install and operate a license plate reader project in East Birchwood in Jericho. Once the details are finalized with the relevant organizations, a more formal announcement will be made and we will update this page of our Website. In the meantime, if you made a financial contribution to the project, starting today, we will be refunding your GoFundMe.com contribution. Thank you for taking action to make East Birchwood a safer community.

June 16, 2023 Update:

The Birchwood Civic Association (BCA) has been waiting for a local elected official who might be able to secure a New York State grant to obtain LPRs for the East Birchwood community. Although the New York State budget has been passed, legislators just reached the end of the legislative session on June 8, 2023. We are still waiting for an update from the elected official. The BCA has been holding onto your contributions since early 2023. If a state grant is provided, the BCA will promptly refund your contribution.

March 29, 2023 Update:

Thank you for your patience as the Birchwood Civic Association (BCA) navigates through the license plate reader (LPR) process. The BCA has been meeting with a local elected official who might be able to secure a New York State grant to obtain LPRs and work with the Nassau County Police Department to implement LPRs in the East Birchwood community. This process could take several months. When the New York State budget is passed in the next week or two, we will have more information. If a state grant is provided, the BCA will promptly refund your contribution.
